Brentwood, Tenn. (July 25, 2010) – Quorum Health Resources hospital client Rutherford Hospital Inc. has been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as a Top 20 U.S. Community Hospital (325 or fewer beds). According to Becker’s, a healthcare business and legal information publication, each hospital included on the list was selected using scores in a number of publicly-available indicators, including patient safety, outcomes and satisfaction, and by rankings on industry lists, including hospital rankings by Thomson Reuters, U.S. News & World Report and HealthGrades.

Rutherford Hospital Inc., a QHR management client since 1983, is a 143-bed acute-care hospital located in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. In addition to being named a Top 20 U.S. Community Hospital, the hospital was also recently named to Thomson Reuters’ list of 100 Top Hospitals and to Cleverley & Associates’ list of 100 Top Hospitals based on the value they provide to their communities. Rutherford Hospital also received HealthGrades’ Gastrointestinal Surgery Excellence Award in 2009. The hospital was the only hospital in North or South Carolina to receive the Top 20 distinction from Becker’s.

“Rutherford Hospital Inc. is to be commended for its ongoing commitment to patient safety, patient satisfaction and quality outcomes. The hospital’s board, leadership team, staff and physicians are clearly determined to lead by example, and QHR applauds the well-earned success they’re enjoying,” said QHR President and CEO James L. Horrar.

“When we receive recognitions such as this, I’m most proud that our community has the opportunity to see how others in healthcare view the quality and service we provide at RHI,” said David Bixler,
Rutherford Hospital CEO. “We’ve shown consistently over the last several years that our results are among the best in the nation. Thomson Reuters, Cleverley & Associates, and Becker’s are all respected national organizations.
Pekin Hospital CEO Named CEO of the Year by QHR

Brentwood, Tenn. (June 18, 2009) – Quorum Health Resources (QHR), the nation’s largest hospital management company and the seventh largest healthcare consulting firm in the United States, recently announced Kevin Andrews, CEO of Pekin Hospital, as the recipient of its top honor: CEO of the Year. The award was given as part of QHR’s 2010 Excellence in Leadership awards.

“Kevin Andrews and the management team at Pekin Hospital are being celebrated for having guided their hospital through a very difficult time: In 2009, Central Illinois’ major employer downsized, driving unemployment in Pekin from 6.5 percent to 16 percent,” said QHR President and CEO James L. Horrar. “Despite these challenges, the hospital’s income statement and balance sheet remained strong – in large part because Kevin and his team instituted an expense reduction plan to accommodate the changing market dynamics.”

“Kevin is a very strategic thinker,” added QHR Regional Vice President over Pekin Hospital, Gerald Parton. “He makes tough decisions because it’s the right thing to do. In doing so, he has won the respect of the hospital’s management team, hospital board and medical staff.”

One example of Kevin’s commitment to sustainable success: physician relations. According to a 2008 Physician Opinion Survey, Pekin Hospital had an overall physician satisfaction rate of 63 percent. Kevin approached this challenge head-on and, as a result, in 2009, the hospital’s physician satisfaction rate was 92 percent – even as the hospital recruited six new physicians and converted employed physician contracts from fixed salary to another payment model.

And when deep cuts were made to employee benefits, including frozen salaries, reduced 401K matches, decreased shift differentials and elimination of recruitment bonuses, the CEO took the bad news to the employees in person, holding town hall meetings for every shift to explain why these cuts were necessary to avoid layoffs. They didn’t like the news, but valued the transparent communication of the situation facing the hospital.

“Kevin’s leadership style and the results achieved under such difficult circumstances serve as an example to us all,” Horrar concluded. “We’re proud to call him QHR’s CEO of the Year.” A native of El Paso, Texas, Kevin has served as CEO of Pekin Hospital since 2007. Prior to joining Pekin Hospital, he served as Senior Vice President, QHR Intensive Resources, which provides interim shortterm hospital operational support, and addresses and advises owners on operational improvements of financially distressed hospitals. Kevin has more than 30 years of healthcare experience, which
encompasses over a decade of multi-facility management and division operations for a large hospital company. He also has 15 years of experience as a hospital CEO, five of which were spent at hospitals in the Midwest.

Kevin received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in management from Texas A & M University and a Master of Health Administration degree from Washington University. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

In addition to the CEO of the Year award, QHR also presented 2010 Excellence in Leadership honors to CEOs at the following client hospitals:
Benewah Community Hospital (Saint Maries, Idaho)
Bucyrus Community Hospital (Bucyrus, Ohio)
Georgetown Hospital System (Georgetown, S.C.)
Girard Medical Center (Girard, Kansas)
Gritman Medical Center (Moscow, Idaho)
Hancock Medical Center (Bay St. Louis, Miss.)
Hoopeston Regional Health Center (Hoopeston, Ill.)
Jersey Shore Hospital (Jersey Shore, Penn.)
Matagorda Regional Medical Center (Bay City, Texas)
Neshoba County General Hospital (Philadelphia, Miss.)
Phelps Memorial Health Center (Holdrege, Neb.)
St. James Parish Hospital (Lutcher, La.)
Tippah County Hospital (Ripley, Miss.)
West Park Hospital (Cody, Wyom.)

“QHR is proud and pleased of the accomplishments of all of these skilled hospital leaders. Their commitment to serving their communities – while positioning their hospitals for long-term sustainability – is commendable,” Horrar said.

Brentwood, Tenn. (April 27, 2010) – Quorum Health Resources, the national market leader in hospital management and the seventh largest healthcare management consulting firm in the United States, is proud to announce that its hospital client, Steele Memorial Medical Center (Salmon, Idaho), has won first place in Blue Cross of Idaho’s 2009 Hospital Quality Awards.

“We’re so proud of Steele Memorial’s ongoing and successful commitment to quality improvement,” said QHR President and CEO James L. Horrar. “The hard work and dedication of the hospital’s leadership, board, staff and medical team is commendable, and we’re proud to be their partner in strategic, operational and financial management.”

“I am so thankful to the entire team at Steele Memorial for all they do to ensure that we deliver quality healthcare to our community each and every day,” said Linda Astalos, CEO at Steele Memorial Medical Center. “As with many successful organizations, our strength is having the right people in the right positions. outcomes, and rewards hospitals based on their results. The program evaluates several criteria, including the implementation of evidence-based measures known to improve health outcomes in treating
pneumonia, heart attack, congestive heart failure and diabetes. The program also evaluates and promotes patient safety by monitoring infections and surgical complications.

Brentwood, Tenn. (April 8, 2010) – Wooster Community Hospital, a QHR management client since 1994, was recently ranked among the top 100 hospitals in the United States in overall organizational performance by Thomson Reuters; the results of the healthcare company’s 100 Top Hospitals® National Benchmarks Study were announced in the March 29 issue of Modern Healthcare.

“This year’s study magnified the value that 100 Top Hospital® award winners provide their communities. Even during the economic downturn, the 100 Top Hospitals® maintained a profit from operations while raising the bar for clinical quality and patient satisfaction,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals® programs at Thomson Reuters. “The insistence of these hospitals’ leaders – their boards, executive teams and medical staffs – on overall excellence makes the difference.”

“This is a prestigious national award, because it is not something you apply for. It is data driven and Thomson Reuters utilizes a broad set of comprehensive metrics,” said Bill Sheron, CEO at Wooster
Community Hospital. “Being named a 100 Top Hospital® validates the ongoing commitment and outstanding work of our employees and medical staff. It celebrates what we provide our patients and
community each and every day.

“To have won this award for each of the last three years is a remarkable achievement,” he added. “Wooster Community Hospital continues to raise the bar for community hospitals of all sizes,” said QHR

Brentwood, Tenn. (April 1, 2010) – For the second year in a row, participating QHR hospital clients received rebates from a unique and innovative partnership between QHR and Gallagher Healthcare Insurance Services: the QHR/Gallagher Retro Insurance Program. The profit sharing payments – totaling more than $2.7 million – were awarded because the QHR hospital group experienced less than projected risk management expenses.

“This program not only provides our clients with access to a hospital professional liability/general liability insurance plan, but also allows them to benefit when our group meets its risk management goals,” said QHR President and CEO James L. Horrar. “We’re thrilled to see our hospital group – again – enjoying such success through this innovative partnership.”

According to Sollie Bartoe, Area President, Gallagher Healthcare Insurance Services, each hospital that participates in the QHR/Gallagher Retro Insurance Program is underwritten individually, and the HPL and UL premium for each hospital is based on their exposure, location and loss experience. The return premium – up to 50 percent – is determined on a group basis for the member hospitals in each calendar year.

QHR has a long-standing relationship with Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services, the fifth largest insurance brokerage and risk management services firm worldwide. The company provides hospital professional liability insurance, comprehensive general liability insurance, excess/umbrella liability insurance and employee benefits services to QHR hospital clients.

QHR Hospital Client, Kadlec Regional Medical Center, Lauded by Consumer Reports

Brentwood, Tenn. (February 25, 2010) – Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington, a QHR management client since 1994, was recently included in a Consumer Reports listing of 105 hospitals in the United States reporting zero central line-associated bloodstream infections for 2008. Data used to develop the list was collected from 926 hospitals in 43 states.

Central-line bloodstream infections are deadly infections associated with catheters that are placed in large veins leading to the heart. The catheters are used to transport essential nutrients, fluids and/or food in large volumes to patients in intensive care. The current average rate of infection among surgical ICUs in the United States is 2.3 infections per 1,000 central line days. Kadlec Regional Medical Center recorded 2,379 central line days with zero bloodstream infections.

“It is estimated that 30 percent of the nearly 99,000 hospital-infection-related deaths in the U.S. each year come from central-line bloodstream infections. The good news is that they are largely preventable – with proper attention given to things like hand washing and disinfection of a patient’s skin,” said QHR Vice President, Clinical Operations, Pat Cooper. “This report gives definitive evidence of the high level of attention and respect being given to the patients at Kadlec. The hospital’s efforts and outcomes are truly outstanding.”

“Our intensivists, nursing staff, respiratory therapists and other members of the Kadlec ICU team have developed aligned goals and adopted care bundles for a variety of situations, and the result has been a dramatically reduced rate of complications and mortality for our ICU patients,” said Kadlec Regional Medical Center CEO Rand Wortman. “We are very proud of the improvements in quality of care and
patient safety that they have achieved. Our community has benefited greatly from their expertise and their efforts to continually improve care.”
