The goal of Supporting Leadership Development for Senior Leaders is to prepare the senior leaders of the hospital to understand their role in supporting their managers through the leadership training process. The success of the leadership curriculum depends greatly on the senior leaders’ ability to mentor their managers through the critical elements of the program. The elements of the Supporting Leadership Development component are:
Senior Leader Only Session: The senior leaders of the hospital attend a half-day instructional session that outline the role of the senior leaders in supporting the hospital’s managers, and provides tools for mentoring the managers through the training program.
Planning Session: A second half-day session leads the senior leaders through the process of identifying the customized content for the leadership curriculum, developing the detailed content agenda or curriculum map, and establishing a timeline for program delivery and deadlines for each session. At this meeting, the QHR Learning Institute team and the hospital’s senior leaders review the strategic goals of the hospital and make clear the connections between the leadership skill needs of the managers and the goals of the hospital.
During this half-day, senior leaders and the QHR Learning Institute:
- Establish a timeline and flexible planning tools
- Identify organizational learning goals
- Identify specific outcomes in terms of content, behaviors, skills and competencies
- Establish the level of customization desired by the hospital [with time parameters]
- Determine who will be involved in developing specific units
- Develop a communication plan for the hospital and the planning team
- Define roles and responsibilities
- Establish where, when, and how the planning and development will take place
A week after the Supporting Leadership Development sessions, the senior leaders of the hospital receive the customized curriculum content map and tentative first session agenda for the program.
