    Customized Leadership/Management Sessions

The QHR Learning Institute design team works with the senior leaders or the liaison(s) appointed by the hospital’s leadership to design each session. The customization process requires a commitment on the part of the hospital to provide a person or team for each session to contribute information on the specific needs of the hospital and its managers and to provide salient examples and authentic hospital materials.

The Managing to Lead curriculum consists of a pre-determined number of on-site sessions. The exact number of sessions are agreed upon jointly by the hospital and the QLI. These sessions are customized for the hospital to cover the issues and topics most important to the hospital’s managers and their senior leadership.

Classroom Sessions: The curriculum is designed around an integrated, problem/project-based approach that has proven highly effective for healthcare environments Barrow, Howard S., M.D. (2000) Problem-based learning applied to medical education. Publisher: Southern Illinois School of Medicine. Springfield, Illinois., Bransford, John D. (2000) How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School. Publisher: National Academy Press. The National Academy of Sciences. Washington, D.C.. In classroom sessions, the hospitals managers are introduced to authentic, complex problems that reflect the on-the-job challenges facing managers at the hospital. Solving these problems requires the application of the target leadership skills and competencies that are the focus of the curriculum. For example, managers may be asked to respond to a visit from “the state” in ways that test their understanding of the processes, procedures, and approaches preferred by the hospital.

Problem-solving and Skill Building Opportunities: The participants are guided through activities, resources, and projects that will help them to solve the initially assigned problem. The materials are provided in print, audiovisual, and/or online formats and may include off-the-shelf published materials as well as custom-developed resources. Many of the materials provided in the course sessions will be the actual tools used on the job by the hospital’s managers and their staff.
